Chapter 9 of our text discusses Project Human Resource Management.  Historically, as technical people rose in the ranks to management positions, they may not have had the skills to be effective in obtaining and assigning people to tasks or managing the people who reported to them.  Yet, as our text explains, this ability is vital to the success of any project.  The theories explained in this chapter can help a manager build and motivate a successful team.  This three-part discussion topic addresses that.

  1. Using Maslov’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory, explain why just giving a large salary is unlikely to be enough to provide motivation. Give examples (about 3) of what would be good motivators.
  2. Discuss, in the context of salary, how Herzberg’s theory and Maslow’s theory are consistent. If you do not agree that they are consistent, explain why you do not agree.
  3. In a similar fashion, discuss the commonalities between McGregor’s theory (include Theory Z if you like) and Maslov’s theory. If you do not think there are any commonalities, explain that.
  4. (optional) if you have had an extremely motivating or de-motivating experience, either as a manager or subordinate, and would like to discuss it, please do so. It would be good if you can relate it to any of the theories you read about in this chapter.

Maslow Hierarchy of Needs Theory states that people have a pyramid of hierarchy that they need to satisfy from the bottom to the top respectively. This pyramid is can be divided into two sections that are: deficiency needs that include psychological needs, social, self-esteem and safety; growth needs which includes and self-actualization. Maslow explains that if the deficiency needs are not met then a person may find it difficult to climb to the top needs of self-actualization. An employer should not only focus on giving large salaries to his/her employees so as to motivate them. Yes they need money fulfill a lot of needs in their lives but…..
