Public policy in the U.S
What are the major activities in the formulation, implementation, and evaluation stages related to public policy in the U.S.?
The most important objective of identifying the different stages related to public policies in the U.S. is to find out what the issue is and determine how to address the issue accordingly. Formulating a policy to resolve an issue or problem can be difficult at times because this is the stage where decisions are made upon different parties whom are involved to implement a new supportive policy for many individuals within the United States. “After identifying the issue or problem, a new public policy may be formulated and developed” (The Policy Circle, 2013).
The major activities addressed in the formulation stages related to public policy in the U.S. are identified as setting goals and outcomes of the policy or policies. For example, some issues the U.S. has been encountering are decreased access to health care services, or lack of health care resources. Some policies may include, improving the health status of individuals such as patients and increasing access to health care services by improving the availability of resources and other beneficial sources that are available. Another issue that may be addressed within the policy are greater employment opportunities for individuals within their workplace.
However, there are policy outcomes that measures the specific ending result of how the policy will be worked out and handled. This is another way of reviewing a status update on how all parties whom are involved in the decision making process of the policy. Ensuring that other alternate solutions will be provided for individuals in the U.S. This is part of the process that identifies proposed actions whom are articulated, debated upon, and drafted into becoming the final law or policy implemented. All parties whom are involved in the policy making process are the government officials, individual citizens, and interest groups. “All parties must compromise before the policy is written” (Arevalo, M; Goodman, D, 2003).
The major activities addressed in the implementation stages related to public policy in the U.S. is during this stage of implementation, the policymakers gather the required support that they have created for the policy to be finalized and approved. There has to be support from communities and other parties in order for the policy to be effective. “The implementation stage of policy making creates a working, approved version of the policy in action. Authorities then enforce the policy actively” (Thibodeaux, 2013).
The major activities addressed in the evaluation stages related to public policy in the U.S. are during this stage of evaluation, the policy makers reviews the process and determine if the policy is effective enough to pass and not fail. This is where policymakers look for any negative results or feedback that may prevent the policy from being passed after it has been enforced.
