philosophical reflection upon both (i) the text of Plato’s Republic, and (ii) the content of
course lectures and discussion-sections. And your assignment, moreover, is to do
this without drawing on any written sources save for: Plato’s Republic itself, Professors
lecture slides, your own course notes, and handouts/slides (if any) disseminated by me. In responding to (Q1)-(Q3), be as complete and precise as possible. You do not need
to preface your answers with superfluous introductory remarks. In each of your responses,
simply answer the exact question(s) asked explaining all relevant points carefully and in
detail.

(Q1) What, according to the theory developed by Glaucon in Republic Book II, is justice?
Why—and in what sense—is it good for a human being to be just, and bad for a
human being to be unjust? (Answer the first of these questions by drawing, above all,
on 358e-359b;2 to answer to the second you should begin by explaining, using your
own examples, the threefold distinction Glaucon sets out at 357b-d).
(Q2) Analyze and explain Socrates’ Republic Book IV argument for the thesis that the
embodied human soul [psych ?e] is a plurality consisting of three distinct parts—one
part driven by reasoning [logos], another driven by spirit [thumos], and a third driven
by appetite [epithumia].
(Q3) What, according to the theory developed by Socrates in Plato’s Republic, is justice?
Why—and in what sense—is it good for a human being to be just, and bad for a
