The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is an organization whose main mission is to know how the environment impacts people to improve their standard quality of living. Its vision is to serve as the world’s leader in research that prevents disease and disability for better health. The strategic plan for 2018–2023 are based on previous plans and match with the overall goals of the NIH.
The organization’s three major themes of research and exploration include: Advancing Environmental Health Sciences, Promoting Translation- Data to Knowledge to Action and Enhancing Scientific Stewardship and Support. These themes seek to advance knowledge, enhance application of evidence to improve public health, and maintain the capacity and human resources needed for environmental health sciences.
NIEHS established these themes were established through a Trends & Insights Survey that was conducted in 2017. The environmental health sciences community and other stakeholders were consulted, and their focus was on maintaining many goals and objectives from the last strategic plan for 2012-2017 while incorporating new advancements in science.
From the three themes, Promoting Translation—Data to Knowledge to Action seems to be the most significant. This theme guarantees that research outcomes make a positive impact and contribute to the enhancement of public health through policy development, community engagement, and concerns with environmental health disparities. It emphasizes on stakeholder engagement, enhancing intervention approaches, and addressing new environmental health threats. The focus on translation guarantees that data generated at NIEHS are used to take appropriate actions that make a positive impact on human health.
Interdisciplinary research means combining diverse scientific disciplines to solve multifaceted issues in environmental health. Some stakeholders involved in coming up with the strategic plan are scientists, policymakers, public health practitioners, advocates, representatives from industries, government and federal agencies. Their combined expertise ensures that environmental health research responds closely to the needs of the public.

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is committed to promoting awareness of environmental health hazards and its vision of emerging as a leader in disease control and disability through scientific discovery. The 2018-2023 strategic plan is developed on top of earlier plans and goals and cohesively integrates with overall NIH strategic goals of advancing environmental health sciences, and translating knowledge to action.
The three strategic objectives of the plan are: Advancing Environmental Health Sciences, Fostering Translation-Data to Knowledge to Action, and Enhancing Scientific Stewardship and Support. The themes contextualize advancing knowledge, translating research into better health, and advancing stewardship of resources and talent within the subject matter.
NIEHS took up the Trends & Insights Survey of researchers and policymaker, and other stakeholders in 2017. The survey prioritized maintaining focus on priority areas of research while developing new strategies due to emerging trends of science like exposome, predictive toxicology, and environmental epigenetics.
Of the three, most critical is Promoting Translation-Data to Knowledge to Action. It is aimed at translating environmental health research into informing decision making and increasing community engagement and health equity. The emphasis of this theme is translating findings of research into practice in real life and making people’s lives better, by providing decision makers with knowledge to alleviate environmental hazards and make people’s lives better.
Interdisciplinary research calls on scientists of varied fields of science to unite on seeking answers to environmental health issues. The process of formulating the NIEHS strategic plan entailed bringing together diverse actors including scientists, health practitioners, government institutions, environmental institutions, and people that are affected by environmental issues. Collective contribution by each of them ensures that what is researched within NIEHS is useful and useful in responding to environmental hazards and advancing health among individuals.
