The appeal of advertisements

Respond to the following prompts in this discussion board:

In Learning Block 2, we will explore the appeal of advertisements. Think back to the ads you chose in Project 1. In your initial post, include a link or attachment with your chosen ads, and describe your emotions as you watched/viewed them. Address the following questions in your initial post: What about the advertisements made you curious, shocked, or interested in taking a closer look? How did the ads appeal (or not appeal) to your identity as an individual or as a part of the larger society and culture to draw your interest?

Thinking about what we have learned about bias, read your classmates’ posts about their initial reactions to their chosen ads. Then respond to at least two of your classmates. From your perspective, how might bias lead viewers to experience or perceive the chosen ad differently?

Hello Everyone,

The ad I am choosing to discuss is Diaderm Anti-wrinkle cream. https://www.adsoftheworld.com/media/print/diadermine_the_couple.This advertisement made me curious for a few reasons: I’m 50 years old and started using a wrinkle cream myself and was curious to see the ad. Once I looked at the ad the emotions I felt were captivated, the couple looked joyful, fairing the aging process well with minimal wrinkles. What questions it posed for me, is the wrinkle cream actually working? Why does the woman seem to being aging better than the man? Is the cream working better on the woman than the man? This ad as I stated attracted my attention because I actually wanted to see what the cream was about, due to my age and wanting to reduce my own wrinkles. As a society I believe woman tend to worry about aging more so than men. They are also usually more concerned about their appearance. Good luck everyone.

I have attatched the 4 ads that I chose to focus on along with the links. I felt overall that the ads were by no means diverse at all and if so only one was but showed another race/culture in a light that was very uncomfortable. The ad that stuck with me the most was the Colgate “Sinkchild”. It made me uncomfortable how it was perceived that a caucasion woman would run the sink water wastefully while a child clearly in a third world country was suffering. I understand what the ad was trying to convey but I believe it could have been done differently. For example, maybe display several people of all backgrounds taking running water for granted as well as children in several other countries suffering from not having clean running water. I felt this ad was directed toward one demographic and didn’t cover more than that therefore making it a racial and perception issue for me. Interestingly enough in my explicit bias way of thinking I felt this ad could have been portrayed with the same message in a better way. In my implicit bias thought process I didn’t immediately find it offensive until I watched a few times. As I mentioned before this ad in particular stuck out the most but did have in common with the other ads no diversity whatsoever.
