Write a personal narrative of approximately 750 words (you’re welcome to go over for a few hundred words, be try to avoid going under) related to a time of your life where you had an epiphany. As we discussed, Brent Staples and Judith Ortiz-Cofer each experienced a moment of revelation and insight/ In your essay, narrate a personal experience you have had that is related to this theme and explain the significance that this experience has had for you. Organize your narrative in essay form with an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Also, be sure to give your essay a title. Include relevant sensory details and dialogue to allow the reader to share in your experience. This essay counts as 10% of the final course grade. The essay will be graded on the elements of focus, content organization, and correctness, dialogue, and MLA format (a grading rubric is attached.
Grading Criteria for Essay 1: Personal Narrative
5=Excellent, 4=Very good, 3=Satisfactory, 2=Less than satisfactory, 1=Unacceptable
Focus:
Does the essay have a clear thesis that provides a focus for the narrative?
Does this thesis guide the writing throughout the paper?
Where is this thesis placed?
Is the narrative developed in sufficient detail in an essay of 750 words or more?
Does the essay include specific details that appeal to the senses and allow the reader to share in the writer’s experience?
Does the essay include dialogue at important points in the narrative?
Organization:
Is the essay organized logically and coherently?
Are the paragraphs related, and do they lead smoothly from one to another?
Does the reader get confused at any point when reading this paper?
Correctness:
Is the essay written in standard English appropriate for a college level audience?
Does the writing contain major errors in grammar and vocabulary that keep the reader from understanding parts of the essay?
