? Target Audience: all students, faculty, and staff at SSC (an opportunity to
share an important part of your life)
? Remember to tell a short story about a specific time in your life. Stories
have a beginning, a middle, and an end.
? Your essay must have a thesis statement that illustrates the main point of
the story (a sentence that is your main point about the story / your
literacy experience or what you feel like is the main point about your
narrative). The thesis (main point) should be one sentence placed at the
end of the introduction (the last sentence).
? The introduction should set the story up for the audience or start the story.
Do not introduce yourself in the introduction (saying what your name is).
Introduce the story.
? Think about tone. Is it a humorous (funny), serious, or neutral story?
Remember, your audience should sense the tone as they read through your
story.
? Support your thesis statement (main point) with relevant details or events
that provide support your main point. This is done by moving the story
from one event to the next. The reader should also see your purpose in
telling this story (What do you want your readers to learn about you by
sharing this part of your life?).
? Make your story come alive by adding short dialogue or direct quotes to
show what people had to say instead of telling everything.
