The relationship between substance abuse and violence can be described as a case of “cause and consequence

The relationship between substance abuse and violence can be described as a case of “cause and consequence” (Anon, 2018).A lot of times drug addictions and violence go hand in hand.Too often times victims of crimes start abusing drugs as a way to cope with what happened or to try and forget about what happened. An example of this could be the victim or a rape or sexual assault may be too ashamed to report the crime so they don’t tell anybody. This is not healthy for the victim and a lot of times they start drinking or using drugs to numb the painful memories of what happened to them.

When it comes to the impact that addiction has on criminal offenders it can vary.Criminal offenders will commit any crime they have to in order to obtain the drug of choice but another avenue to look at is why this happens.Maybe this is the normal for them because they have grown up watching other loved ones do the same thing. The harder the drugs usually the more serious the crime that is committed.

The criminal justice system is so overloaded with offenders because of the crimes that are committed while abusing drugs. Our jails and prisons are housing more and more inmates due to drug crimes. This can range from dealing, selling, using drugs in the commission of a crime, assaults and robberies. Most of these cases are because the person was high while committing these crimes.I feel there needs to be more rehabilitation for substance abuse available in the criminal justice system.I do not think that locking someone up for 10 years depending on the crime, is always necessary.I think we need to focus more on treatment and recovery of the addicts. Most prisons offer treatment classes but they are a generic one size fits all type of thing. We all know that treatment programs should be designed around each individual and their needs.

The intervention method that I would suggest is rehabilitation and focusing on helping the person getting better before being released, I strongly believe in the use of sober living houses after leaving treatment or jail. This type of facility gives them a little more freedom but stresses the importance on staying sober in the real world.

I concur that substance abuse may result to violence. Links have been established between psychoactive substances and violence involving social and economic forces when obtaining, abusing and behaviour after consumption (Meyer, Springer, & Altice, 2011) as demonstrated in the text…………………
