àgoods are calculated on a net basis: no one is guaranteed happiness under utilitarianism: any loss can be ok, if it nets out properly
The method of utilitarianism identify all the options (rules) for dealing with the problem for each possible rule, do the following:
For each and every individual affected, identify costs and benefits
For that individual, assign weighting to each cost or benefit so identified.
Sum the costs and benefits (i.e., determine the net benefit of cost to society) choose the rule that yields the greatest net benefit
Utilitarianism on rights:
Definition of rights (p. 107 Mill quotation): an entitlement that protects you against interference by others. They provide a circle of moral protection around you and the things that are yours. Rights impose obligations on others to refrain from interfering with you and your things.
Utilitarianism regards happiness as the only good, and rights merely as one tool for promoting that good
