The Harlem Renaissance – What was it? Why is it important in the African American experience? What were the main themes demonstrated in the work of Harlem Renaissance artists (writers, poets, playwrights, dancers, musicians, visual artists).
Essay: 2500 words
From the readings and your research write about the Harlem Renaissance and what you learned.
Part 1 1000 words: In two or three sentences describe the Harlem Renaissance. Then, using your research describe the cultural, economic, social and political conditions that led to the Harlem Renaissance. What was it trying to express and what does it have meaning today. If so, what? If not why not?
Part 2 1000 words: Choose two artists from the Harlem Renaissance. One woman and one man. Write a short cultural and political biography of each. Also, choose a work of the artist and write 2 or 3 paragraphs discussing why you chose those artists and what you think of their work that you researched. Describe the work and why you chose it.
Part 3 500 words: What did this research make you think about Black life during the era of the Harlem Renaissance.
Citations are required.
Research: Create a bibliography of 20 books written by Black authors about the Harlem Renaissance. It can include biographies and autobiographies as well as scholarly studies. It should also include several books written by Harlem Renaissance era writers.
