The job market

The job market

We are currently discussing supply and demand and the basics of the model that we will continue to use throughout the course. I want you to look at a market situation that pertains to something that you are interested in, (Examples: If you want to be an accountant, look at the job market for CPA’s in Cincinnati. Or, if you are interested in a career in retail management, look at the market for a particular good or service. Or, if you are really into a sport, look at the supply and demand for something related to that.) AND consider how what we’ve discussed in class applies to it.

Before you get too worried about this, I want to make it clear that I am NOT looking for a detailed research project. You obviously need to be familiar with what you are discussing, but you don’t need to spend hours getting some background information on this. What I AM interested in is how you can apply what we’ve learned in class to something that is not only “real world”, but that interests you as well. Also, feel free to be creative with this; I’d prefer not to see out of the book examples, but rather things that you find interesting.

Structure:

Provide a graph of the supply and demand curves. Show me what happens when they both shift.

Explain what would cause these shifts in terms of your example and why the demand and supply curves would move the way they do.

Tips:

Keep it simple. I don’t need an in-depth analysis of supply & demand

…………………Answer preview…………………….

The job market for accountants holding CPA in Cincinnati is one that has been determined by the forces of supply and demand. The increase in demand for the job leads to a decline in the salaries offered to the accountants. While the decrease in supply of accountants in the job market leads to increased salaries. At the same time, the shift in the demand curve to any position whether left or right is determined by the change of taste and preferences………………….
