The Hunger Games
Summary/Response Paper
For your second three-to-four-page summary/response paper, you may use any of the following texts as subjects:
The Hunger Games
Your summary/response paper should include a brief (ideally, one paragraph) summary of the work, followed by a response that analyzes some specific aspect of the work (for example, if you choose to write about The Hunger Games, you might choose to analyze the role of surveillance or the divide between social classes). and please remember that you should stay away from writing a review of the work (“I liked it,” “I didn’t like it,” etc.).
Your summary/response paper should have a clear thesis statement that makes an argument about how or why a theme/aspect of a work is significant; in other words, you should not just say (for example), “Surveillance was an important theme in The Hunger Games.” A better thesis statement would be something like, “The fact that Hunger Games contestants were under constant surveillance caused Katniss not only to alter her own behavior, but to become unsure about her own feelings and motives.” This gives you something concrete to organize your paper around; you would then spend the rest of your essay demonstrating how surveillance caused Katniss to become unsure about her own feelings and motives, using specific examples from the text.
Your essay should be typed, double-spaced in twelve-point Times New Roman font, and follow standard MLA format. This means that you should not have a separate title page, but should have a double-spaced heading on the first page that includes your name; my name; the course; and the assignment due date. You should also include a title that draws the audience in and makes it clear what your essay is about. You will also include a Works Cited page (in addition to the required three-four pages), even if you only cite the work analyzed.
