The ability to tell a story may on the surface seem like a skill that is unimportant, however, with more consideration one may find that storytelling is an integral part of our lives, our growth, and our learning. Cultures from around the world, including the African American community, use narratives to convey their values and history. Narratives are also important in business, as companies and organizations share the story behind their brands to attract and connect with their customers.
Competencies:
COMPETENCY 1: Understand and demonstrate writing process strategies, including how to discover a topic, how to develop and organize a text, and how to adapt writing style and format to different audiences, purposes, and context.
COMPETENCY 2: Compose written texts for scholarly or professional purposes. Communicate using accepted conventions of standard written English and applying those techniques that produce effective texts.
Student Learning Outcomes:
o Demonstrate academic writing skills across several writing types following the structural content appropriate for APA format.
o Become familiar with rhetorical devices and the application of how to apply a thesis to argumentation
Directions:
Choose a song from the “Soundtrack of My Life” assignment. Write a narrative essay about the story behind why you chose that song for your soundtrack. There are a few ways to approach the essay:
1. Tell the story of when the song helped you get through a challenging or difficult time in your life .
2. Tell the story of an event in your life that the lyrics of the song bring up in your mind.
3. Tell the story of a time when you felt the way the song made you feel.
The first draft of the essay will need to be at least 4 pages of content typed. There is no penalty for writing more. Be sure to use a title page.
I have attached an example essay for study (note that some changes in the introduction have been made, different from the example essay received in class).
“Power” by Kanye “Ye” West. This song by Ye is almost like a motivational
song apart of my soundtrack of life. Power makes me feel as though no one can
stand in my way of being a success.
