A Text without a Context is a Pretext for a Prooftext
One of the primary roles of an individual in ministry is to take the unchanging Word of God and explain this Word to the world. Kaiser and Silva argue in Introduction to Biblical Hermeneutics that the context and meaning of a passage is unchanging, yet the significance of the passage changes based on culture and time. Therefore, a correct interpretation of context and meaning is vital if the significance of a passage for the world today is going to be correctly identified.
First, identify an example of a poorly-articulated context of a passage that led to the misapplication of the passage’s significance. You may use personal experiences or experiences common in the church today. Second, briefly identify the most important aspects of the context of your passage for the paper you are writing.
