Termination of a client-counselor relationship is a decision that can happen for any number of reasons. For clients who seek assistance with one-off issues, termination may be a result of solving or coming to terms with the issue in question. Termination may also happen when the counselor feels unsafe with their clients. A more benign reason may be because the client or counselor are moving locations and are unable to keep meeting consistently for sessions.



If a client is not displaying signs of progress or lasting change through sessions with the counselor, then they may not fit the criteria for termination. On the other hand, terminating the relationship after connecting the client with another counselor may prove to be the better course of action. Deciding if a client is ready for termination is likely an aspect of counseling that relies heavily on a case-by-case basis.



Instant grounds for termination of a relationship for myself as a counselor would be if a client noticeably breaks boundaries between the client-counselor relationship, or threaten myself in any way with actionable intent. However, when determining my own readiness for termination, I’d like to assume I’d be in the position to follow through on my beliefs. Sometimes we as counselors don’t get to choose our clients, and have to put up with less than ideal circumstances. I do look forward to seeing what my limits & expectations for clients
