Technology disruption
Discussion Aim: Critically examine disruptive technology impact on the “Goods-Producing” industry sectors, and apply “two-eyed” seeing to assess effects on workers, communities and society.
Our goal over the next two weeks is to critically examine the wide-ranging impacts of Technology disruption in different industry sectors, considering not just the impact on the industry, but on the workers, communities, and society as a whole. This week we focus on “Goods-ProducingLinks to an external site.” Industries as defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Utilizing our resources this week, our learning from last week regarding disruptive technologies, and the readings from Beyond the Valley:
- Critically examine both the business opportunities (the business case) and challenges that digital disruption will bring to the Goods-Producing Industry sectors.
- Be sure to address impacts on workers, the community, and society, keeping in mind that what is financially good for an industry may be bad for a community or for workers!
- To do this well, it is essential that you bring in outside sources that support your application of “two-eyed seeing” – what is the workers\\\’ point of view? How will the community be affected? What will this disruption mean for society in the long term?
Goods-Producing Sector Resources:
Our additional readings and resources this week look at different industries in the Goods-Producing sectors. They include readings about Mining, Forestry, Construction, Agriculture, and Manufacturing. We will also examine the supply chain. As you engage with the readings and resources, keep top of mind the impacts of the changes on the industry AND the workers, community, and region.
