Technology and its use in families today can be a benefit and a concern
Technology and its use in families today can be a benefit and a concern. I know that it is not uncommon for a family to come in and discuss what barriers are put up by technology. I was even recently looking through some of the MFT literature on couples and found an article of “how to ruin your marriage before bed,” which discussed several elements of the way technology alters our relationships and ability to connect and disconnect from our families. How would you go about assessing those boundaries around technology usage in a family session? What are some possible interventions that you may suggest?
One area to note as we begin our work on family systems and dynamics is once we understand the meaning of these terms it is important to understand how we go about assessing for things such as family roles, rules, and how a family maintains their homeostasis. Please list various ways that you would go about assessing these with a family in the first couple sessions and if this is a new area to you, please feel free to share what questions you have about being able to accurately assess for these things to be able to help a family that was seeking therapy with you.
