The most common perspectives on teaching and learning I believe that have historically exerted the greatest influence is progressive education. Progressive education means many different things. In essence, it was a large growing effort to improve the quality of education. There was also an interest in improving more innovative ways of teaching to help students become more engaged and enthusiastic about learning. Progressive education was an educational movement that many educators believed that schools should begin with the life experience of the child rather than with a preset curriculum. In other words, child centered programs and the real world of experiences provide a better focus of learning and understanding than textbooks and lectures. John Dewey, one of the most influential philosophers of education was a defender of progressive education. Dewey wanted to link curriculum with the interests of the student, this approach was different to Dewey.
According to Reese (2013), while this movement was well intentioned, educators agreed on some fundamentals: to broaden the social functions of the school, promote the needs of individual children, and extend the benefits of the arts and sciences to everyone. With this approach, the curriculum needs to be connected to the interests of the students. Effective teachers will implement ways of learning experience for students to be more engaging, creating an environment of enthusiasm for learning, rather than overwhelming students with paperwork, tests, and assessments. This will only cause students to become less engaged and have a low level of enthusiasm for learning. While preparation and planning are important, so are the elements of finding innovative ways to engage students. Dewey wanted to change school from being a place where only teachers are active, and students are passive. Can this be accomplished? Is there a way to in a sense create an environment where students have fun while learning? A challenging task to explore? The problem is making the curriculum interesting and relevant to students and teachers to overcome the boredom experienced inside the classroom.
