Part of creating high quality and developmentally appropriate curriculum
Part of creating high quality and developmentally appropriate curriculum is making sure that what you plan is tied to the children you are teaching. The only way to do this is by observing the children while they are playing.
The goal of this project is to observe a child at play and based on your observations, plan a developmentally appropriate learning activity for them in the curriculum area of((((( Math or Science)))))) (choose one of these two). Choose one of the following videos to complete the observation portion of this assignment. During the observation, you should be taking notes on your own paper.

For this assignment, you will turn in the Observation Form. Download Observation Form.

You do not need to turn in your handwritten notes. The Observation Form will allow you to document what you observed and to analyze and reflect on that observation
Activity Plan
Remember how young children learn: actively constructing knowledge from hands on experiences with the gentle support and guidance of an adult who provides developmentally appropriate materials and experiences.
To complete your Learning Plan, you will need to use the Learning Plan Outline Download Learning Plan Outline

. Your completed Learning Plan Outline should include the following information:
Your name
Curriculum Area your plan primarily focuses on
A short summary of the observation that inspired you to create the Learning Plan
California Preschool Learning Foundations that show us what developmental learning you could focus on (include the domain, volume and page number). Must indicate specific foundation number.
Example from observation:

Your goals written using the Bloom’s Taxonomy framework. This should be written as The children will _________ by _____________________________.
Now, it is finally time to write the name of your activity.
Procedure Section. In this section you need to include:
Materials you will need: (Be specific and complete. A substitute should be able to get everything needed from this list)
Location in classroom or outdoors experience will be done in:
Group size: (remember smaller is usually better)
Preparation: (what do you need to do before introducing it to children to get it ready for them – no children in this)
Introducing it to the children: (What will you say to introduce the experience?)
Process for the actual activity: (How do you expect the experience to unfold? What will you do?)
Open-ended questions you will use: (What will you ask children to get them to think deeper and make connections? These should not have one right answer.)
Vocabulary and terminology you will include: (What words do you want to use/expose children to during this experience)
Concluding the experience with the children: : (What will you say to conclude the experience?)
Remember that when you plan developmentally appropriate curriculum, it is tied to what you know about the children you are planning for. It is based on their interests, questions and curiosity, and developmental needs. It should be meant to “provoke” their learning. It is not something that is done because the teacher thinks it will be fun or cute or because it looks like a fun idea that you found on the internet or in curriculum book. The goal is for children to engage deeply with what you plan. So it should be something valuable that they will be able to connect with as they get involved, hands on. They should be able to make choices, voice their opinions, and explore. The majority of the experience should involve the children doing (not the teacher talking or doing). Please allow children to express themselves creatively. Creativity is vital. Things that are open-ended and allow children to make choices and express themselves are far more appropriate. Things where there is a preferred final outcome (such as crafts) or an adult model are NOT appropriate for preschoolers. You also need to avoid anything that would be photocopied, cut and paste activities, or that requires them to color in the lines, etc. At this age it is still highly recommended to avoid making things competitive or having winners and losers (they have their whole life to experience that pressure and let down).
The final step will be typing up and putting everything together. Use a coversheet, next place the Observation Form, and then finally the activity plan. You will not demonstrate or present this assignment. It is only completed in written form.
