Tacoma Narrows Bridge
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed due to high winds. It collapsed four months after construction, it was opened on 1st July 1940 and it collapsed in November 7 1940. The damages include the main cables, the suspended cables, side spans, piers, deck floor system, towers (“Tacoma Narrows Bridge: Lessons From The Failure Of A Great Machine”). This brought a lot of concern as people wondered on how could a “modern” suspension bridge which was constructed with such advanced design collapse, especially over winds. The collapse was investigated by the some appointed boards by the U.S government and among the things which stood out was the significant weakness which was its great flexibility………………….
