Synthesis involves taking information from multiple sources
Synthesis involves taking information from multiple sources and making the connections between them to support a theory or claim (Darowski et al., 2022). Synthesis is different from summarizing because the writer is tasked with providing an interpretation of the information found. Summarizing simply takes what was written and simplifies the information. Two types of synthesis are discussed in the text, explanatory or argument, that writers use to present information on selected topics (D’Urso, 2020). Explanatory synthesis focuses on comprehension of a topic, while argument synthesis focuses on presenting a claim and defending the claim through different sources (D’Urso, 2020). Synthesis pushes the writer to present both sides of a topic in a manner that results in a deeper understanding of the topic using more than one source from different authors (D’Urso, 2020). The ability to appropriately synthesize data is imperative to ensure the literature review effectively supports the identified problem. The literature review helps make the connection between the chosen topic and the need for new research.
