Passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG).
This assignment is focused around the recent passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG).
(1) For this assignment, I want you to research (articles, videos, etc.) how a Supreme Court Justice is appointed (including senate hearings), what their role is, and for how long do they serve. You will explain the process in one paragraph (3-4 sentences minimum).
(2) Next, tell me what is currently happening in an attempt to fill her position. Compare what republican senate leaders did during Obama’s administration, leading to Justice Kavanaugh, to what those same senate leaders are saying now. Is it hypocritical? Why or why not? Was a standard set and should it be followed? (5-6 sentences minimum). I will also post videos on this issue (2nd video) and Justice Kavanaugh to get you started. (3rd to 6th videos)
(3) Tell me about RBG’s relationship with Justice Scalia who had the opposite belief system as her and tell me your opinion. (2-3 sentences minimum)
(4) Next, you will look at RBG’s path to the Supreme Court and tell me: (A) What you learned about her (B) What was interesting about her life (C) What did she take a stance on (D) Tell me about one of her decisions/stances that spoke to you. (2 paragraphs, 4-5 sentences each paragraph)
(5) Next, you will tell me why it is important to have a stable, non-bias judge on the Supreme Court. What is at stake if we do not have that? What do you have to lose? Would that impact you and your life? If yes or no, tell me why. How did you feel when you realized things might change for you or might not change for you? (2 paragraphs, 3-4 sentences each paragraph)

During a prior class you all mentioned that you wanted me to post the videos about Justice Kavanaugh. The current president nominated Brett Kavanaugh to be a Supreme Court Justice. There were allegations of sexual assault against him. During a senate hearing to deicide his confirmation, both sides asked him questions to decide if he was fit to take the role and look at his record and who he is as a person and a judge. Corresponding videos below, including original clips, recaps by a late night show, etc.

^ 15 minute clip of the “key moments” Both sides get to ask questions and you will be seeing them. When it says “(R)” that is a republican. When it says “(D)” that is a Democrat.
It starts with objections b/c the committee was given 42K pages of documents the night before the hearing with no time to review the documents about the future Supreme Court Justice. You decide if you think that is fair. For example, If I give you 42K documents to read the night before a test, how would you feel about that?
Pay close attention to how questions are asked, if people are using their time to ask questions to just make their own comments, and how Kavanaugh is responding. He wants to be on the highest court, so how do you feel about the way he answers these questions?

^Dr. Ford (alleged victim) is also asked questions. This is a recap with commentary by Stephen Colbert (left leaning) about what she said and the questions she was asked.

Saturday Night Live (Sketch Comedy) also did a skit on this. If you saw the hearings, which were a few days long, this refers to the entirety of the hearings.
