Examination of how race/ethnicity, gender and sexuality intersect in certain stereotypes of Blacks
We will be devoting several class sessions to an examination of how race/ethnicity, gender and sexuality intersect in certain stereotypes of Blacks, Latinos and Asians. Examples will include Buck, Jezebel, the Latin Lover, the Half-Breed Harlot/Whore, Fu Manchu and the Lotus Blossom/Geisha Girl. For your final paper for this class, your assignment is to reflect on these lectures and your course readings then answer the questions below. Assume I know nothing about which you are writing, so be thorough. Be sure to use all relevant terminology and provide all necessary definitions.
(1) Define stereotype and briefly explain how commonly held stereotypes have been maintained and legitimized by various institutions such as families, schools, churches and the media.
(2) Select two stereotypes, covered in class, in which race/ethnicity, gender and sexuality intersect. They cannot be of the same race/ethnicity.
(3) How do race/ethnicity, gender and sexuality intersect in the stereotypes you have selected?
(4) Who created these stereotypes and for what purpose? Note: This will require you to provide historical context, such as the animosity of some white Americans toward Chinese immigrants who were willing to work longer hours for lower wages.
(5) In what ways do you think race/ethnicity, gender and sexuality intersect in contemporary stereotypes of blacks, Latinos and/or Asians? Provide two examples.
(6) How hopeful are you that we will reach a place as a society where these types of stereotypes no longer exist? What specifically makes you feel this way?
Your paper should be approximately 5-6 pages in length, double-spaced, in 12 pt. Times New Roman font. You are expected to draw from the lectures, at least two of the assigned readings and at least one reading you find on your own. (Note that the reading must come from a reputable source, such as a peer-reviewed academic journal—not a magazine or newspaper article or Wikipedia.) You must provide in-text citations and a Works Cited or reference page. The official citation style for this course is MLA. However, if you are proficient in another citation style (e.g., APA or Chicago), you may cite your sources using that style.
