Subject of the paper: The limitations of Stakeholder Theory

Requirement: Complete a 3-4 page paper (double-spaced, 12-point font, one-inch margins) in which you discuss and evaluate one of Eric Orts and Alan Strudler criticisms of Stakeholder Theory in “The Ethical and Environmental Limits of Stakeholder Theory.” You should describe the criticism in your own words and attempt to rebut the criticism: either by using resources of Stakeholder Theory (for example, how Edward Freeman himself might attempt to rebut the criticism of the view) or by showing that the criticism is not a problem for Stakeholder Theory for some other reason (for example, because it is not a significant problem in business decision-making). Then, discuss how problematic is Orts and Strudler’s criticism for Stakeholder Theory (i.e., as a theory of business decision-making) in light of your efforts to rebut the criticism. Your paper should also include introductory and concluding paragraphs, as described below.

Components:

1. An introductory paragraph in which you motivate the paper, summarize what you will do in the paper, and state a thesis (e.g., I” argue that Orts and Strudler successfully challenge Stakeholder theory [because . . . ] requiring a revision of this view,” or “Stakeholder Theory has resources to address the problem that Orts and Strudler discuss [such as . . .]”).

2. A summary of Orts and Strudler’s criticism along with the reasoning underlying the criticism.

3. A response to Orts and Strudler’s criticism from the standpoint of Stakeholder Theory (e.g., how Freeman might attempt to defend his view against Orts and Strudler) and the reasoning behind the response.

4. A discussion in which you evaluate whether the response successfully rebuts the criticism or whether the criticism still seems compelling even after the response.

5. A concluding paragraph that summarizes what you have done in the paper and provides any additional (brief) upshots of the discussion, such as a discussion of the way in which Stakeholder Theory should be used in business ethics in light of the criticism of Orts and Strudler that you have discussed.
