The dog dance of the san ildefonso pueblo, in northern new mexico, is one of the more mysterious of the ceremonial dances. At the conclusion of the dance, bread or coins are thrown on the floor for the two “dogs” to battle over. the mystery involves the meaning of the dance, which is supposed to symbolize peace.

Legend has it that fifty Indians from a Wisconsin reservation fought in world war 1, and when forty-nine of them returned, the people created a dance in their honor. In it, the dancers form a line with their partners, alternating men and women, and circle to the left, with left hands on left shoulders along the line. Forty-niner sons are always in English.
