The Persuasive/ Argumentative Essay

An argumentative essay is a piece of writing that requires the writer to do research, analyze evidence, and declare a stance or opinion based upon those obtained facts. This is similar to the expository essay, which is used to present facts or evidence. However, the purpose of the argumentative essay is to persuade the reader into believing the facts or ideas stated in the essay.  The following will describe important assets along with the typical format of a persuasive essay.

The Introduction and Thesis Statement

The introduction is the first paragraph of the essay.  It serves as a brief description of the argument, allowing the reader to understand the purpose of the text to come.  In order to achieve this purpose, the introduction should be informative yet general in context to the rest of the argument.    One method used to serve this purpose is often referred to as the “funneling method.”  When one pictures a funnel, s/he imagines a device that begins very broad at the top and progressively becomes narrower as it reaches the bottom.  The introduction should behave similarly, beginning with a broader view of the topic and eventually reaching a clear and concise argument.  This paragraph should include why the topic is important and the main points that are going to be used to support one’s stance.

*Note: The persuasive essay should be written in 3rd person point of view (Do not use “I,” “we,” “you,” etc.).  Also, it is important to state arguments using declarative speech.  For instance, instead of stating “I believe the bible is true because…,” one should instead state “the bible is true because…”

Body Paragraphs

In shorter essays, each main idea is assigned to one paragraph or section.  For instance, in a five paragraph essay (introduction, three body paragraphs, conclusion), there will be three main ideas described in the thesis which will be designated its own body paragraph, occurring in the same order as in the thesis.  These main ideas should be introduced in the topic sentence, or the sentence at the beginning of each body paragraph.  In longer essays, each main idea is dedicated to a specific section of the paper and is often explained using multiple paragraphs.  Within these sections, it is no longer necessary to be broad as it was in the introduction.  These areas of the essay will be more specific and relate directly to the topic sentence.   It is recommended that the order of presentation of these ideas occurs from least important to most important.

*Note: Although the acronym only portrays one of both ‘e’ and ‘l’, it is important to understand that there could be multiple explanations and links.  What is more important is to remember to link the evidence to the topic so it does not seem out of place, or to ensure the reader understands why the evidence is important.
It is also highly recommended to state a counter argument, or an argument that goes against the author’s point of view.  For example: “Some people will argue that scientific theories disprove the word of the bible.  However, further study will show that the bible can be proven both historically and scientifically.”  In this case, the first sentence is the counter argument while the latter supports the argument of the essay.

The Conclusion

This section is used to summarize the argument in its entirety.  Therefore, new information should not be introduced in this paragraph.  Instead, this paragraph should restate the argument and the main points used to support said argument.

*Note: It is often that this section is over looked by the author because it can be difficult to write or s/he simply does not understand the importance of the concluding paragraph.  However, it is necessary to treat this paragraph with the same importance as other paragraphs because it is the passage that gives the reader his/her final opinion.
