Students will write brief papers (c. 2-3 pages) evaluating up to four out of the nine Frederick Douglass’s speeches provided by the instructor on the Canvas site to assess their value in understanding his activities and accomplishments. Students should read and critique the primary source document by (1) identifying the circumstances of Douglass delivering this address; (2) briefly summarizing the content of the document; and (3) analyzing what that speech reveals about Douglass’s views on the historical problem related to the subject of the day’s lecture.
