Pick two songs with political meaning or messages
Pick two songs with political meaning or messages (lyrics or no lyrics, either is fine). I would suggest picking songs from two different genres or time periods. I have uploaded several songs to the Music content folder in Folio if you need inspiration. Answer the following questions for each of the songs in a 2–4-page, double-spaced essay.
Why was the song written? What event or events inspired the song? If the song was not written for political reasons but was later adopted as a political anthem, why did this happen?
Under what genre would you classify the song ? Classical, rock, country, hip-hop, etc.?
What message is the songwriter sending and how is it delivered? (This should be the longest section.) Comment on the words used, the imagery evoked, the beat, melody, volume, and tone. Don’t just listen passively to the song, deconstruct the music. What makes the song compelling? Read the lyrics separately if necessary.
If the song has a music video (most that I posted do not because of their age) what emotions are the singer/singers attempting to evoke through the imagery? What symbols are used? (The System of a Down, Childish Gambino, Dixie Chicks, and Toby Keith music videos are loaded with symbolism.)
How does the song make you feel? Do you think that the songwriter and/or musician accomplished their goal?
Once you are finished your analysis, use the two songs you chose as examples and write a paragraph or two reflecting on the power of music to convey a political message. Topics you may want to discuss: Is music a good mechanism for fostering social change? Can music promote patriotism? Does political music have more meaning for the singer/songwriter/band or the listener?
