Business is about solving customer problems. Before a business can develop or design a product to sell, it is important to take consumer interests into consideration. You can do this by designing studies that provide greater insight into consumer preferences, concerns, and trends. Such studies help companies increase their marketability and potential profits by developing and selling high-demand products.
Think about the different types of issues either you or other consumers face and how researching those problems may help a business understand issues better, and in turn, fulfill consumer’s needs. Consumer problems are often turned into research questions that marketing departments use to design research studies.
For this discussion, write a consumer question that investigators can study. For example, your question could be, why don’t consumers purchase more electric vehicles? Or, it could be related to your interests such as, what are the most highly rated hiking sites in your state? How much bubblegum does a person buy in a year? Create your own question on any topic of interest to you.
Then, use your example to discuss how all research starts with a question, and answer the following:
- How might researchers turn a question into a research study topic?
- How might the findings of a study impact marketing decisions?
