Solid waste management

Five tons of a mixture consisting of paper and other compostable materials has a moisture content of 7%. The intent is to make a mixture for composting that is 50% moisture. How many tons of water or sludge must be added to the solids to achieve this moisture concentration in the compost pile?

Describe some of the ways landfill gas is currently being used. Which do you view as the most productive, and why?

………………………Answer preview……………………….

Weight of mixture = 5 tones
1 tone =1000kg
5 tones =5×1000kg
=5000kg
Weight of water =7% of mixture
=7/100 × 5000kg
=350kg
Weight of materials =5000kg – 350kg
=4650kg
For water or sludge to be 50% we need 4650kg of water so that water and materials are of the same weight.
Thus water =4650kg
But we have 350kg of water
Added water =4650kg – 350kg
=4300kg

Landfill gas results from decomposition of solid wastes in landfills. It is a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and oxygen. Methane forms 50%, carbon dioxide forms 42%, nitrogen forms 7% and oxygen forms 1% of the gas (Rajaram, Siddiqui, &Emran Khan, 2012). Environmental scientists advocate for the use of landfill gas in place non-renewable energy sources. Landfill gas can be used directly or to generate electricity. Direct use involves preference of landfill gas to other energy sources. It can be used…………………………
