This is the post you’ll be responding to:
Socrates: Do you believe every occurrence has a reason?
Me: I think that every cause has an effect. I would believe that occurrences have explanatory causes.
Socrates: What do you mean when you say “human choice”? What is your definition of a human event? Is there a distinction?
Me: I would say they are related since every human decision leads to a human occurrence
Socrates: Do you think that having an explanatory cause is the same as not being free?
Me: No, I believe that there is a reason for everything. This doesn’t imply that you are not free but rather an explanation for the incident that occured.
Socrates: What does it mean to be free?
Me: The term “free” involves a variety of concepts. It would include being able to make our own decisions. It also allows individuals to choose their religion without having any obligations whether or not to practice it.
Socrates: Do you believe that free will and determinism can ever coexist?
Me: No, I don’t think they can coexist since some philosophers believe that “all occurrences, including moral decisions, are entirely controlled by previously existent causes” (Britannica, 2020). This remark causes one to assume that they are unable to cohabit.
Socrates: Is it possible to have both external and internal determinism?
Me: I don’t believe that external determinism and internal free will can coexist. Free will gives us the ability to make our choices, while determinism claims that no one will ever make moral decisions for themselves.
