Assignment Instructions: Both Karp and Hari discuss how depression and anxiety are linked to a lack of meaningful social connections. Using examples from both Hari and Karp, and using a sociological perspective, discuss how modern societal structures (e.g., urbanization, technology, work-life balance, a medical model of psychiatry) contribute to feelings of isolation? How can mental health professionals, communities and societies foster stronger social bonds to improve mental health outcomes?
Hari discusses the impact of extrinsic versus intrinsic values on mental health, suggesting that consumer culture prioritizes external markers of success (e.g., wealth, status) over deeper personal connections. Link Hari’s discussion about this to the experiences of the people in Chapter 4 of Karp. How might societal pressures, or the systems of “support” contribute to depression and anxiety and make them worse?
