Article Title: “Not Your Typical Student”: The Social Construction of the “First-Generation” College Student
Research: The researcher’s main purpose is to explore how power dynamics through institutional discursive practices can keep first-generation students from developing class awareness by creating a strong sense of identity within their “first-generation” standing. How the institution benefits from the first-generation discourse.
Sampling: 30 first-generation students from Cabot College (Criterion sampling), 10 Staff from the Admissions office and student affairs at events.
Stratified purposeful sampling: researcher is unclear about how they chose participants however they took a representative sample of the first-generation students at the college (10 Latinas, 6 African Americans, and 2 Asians and 12 who identified as white)
Methods: The researcher employed the use of discourse analysis, phenomenology, and qualitative interviews for this study.
Interviews were held with staff members and first-generation students (typically 50-90 minutes long) over the course of 2 years (2012-2014).
Discourse Analysis: the school’s discourse surrounding the creation, enforcement, and sentiment of the category “first-generation college student”
The researcher coded the interviews into themes surrounding the social construction of “first-generation” and the ways in which students identify themselves as “first-generation.”
