Reconnecting With Your Social Work Passion

Discussion 1: Reconnecting With Your Social Work Passion
Individuals are drawn to social work for a variety of reasons. Perhaps your life was positively impacted by a social worker when you were a child, or you have a keen desire to help your community. Being aware of your reason (your “why”), even if it shifts over time, is important for maintaining focus and a goal orientation as you complete your program.

So, take a moment to close your eyes and visualize yourself as a social worker 5 years from now. In this image, are you working with adults or children? What kind of setting are you practicing in—a school, a hospital, a clinic? What social issues are you addressing?

In this first Discussion, you introduce yourself to colleagues and share your passion for social work—in the form of “why” you are pursuing it, “who” you’d like to work with, and “what” social issue you’d like to address.

To Prepare
Consider why you have been drawn to social work and the population and social issues you see yourself working with.
Ensure that you have a quiet place to record without any distractions.
By Day 3
Record and post a 2- to 3-minute video that includes the following:

Your introduction (name, geographic location, and any other details you are comfortable sharing)
Your “why” of social work. The reasons that led you to pursue social work
Your “who.” The population or group with whom you would prefer to work
Your “what.” The social issue(s) this group experiences in society.
