My thesis: Through Juxtaposition of characters, social stratification is conspicuous in Victorian British author Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure, Tess of the D’urbervilles, “The Convergence of the Twain”, and “The Ruined Maid”; More specifically, Sue versus Arabella, Angel versus Alec, the iceberg versus the Titanic (both personified), and the ruined ‘melia and her peasant friend.
