Water is important. In my survival classes it is the second item after shelter you should seek.

1.
Research, Statistics & Water
Class:
Water is important. In my survival classes it is the second item after shelter you should seek. After three days without water you begin to die and will be dead within 7 days. One liter per day is survival, two liters normal, four liters (1 gallon) is plenty.
The whale ship Essex is a true story that Herman Melville based Moby Dick on tells of the crew trying to make it to South America from the middle of the Pacific Ocean, living on one pint of water per day. Many died. See the movie “The Heart of the Sea”.
The UN states that each human needs 12-13 gallons (50 liters) of water per day for all needs (drinking, cooking, washing).
We are running out of fresh water. There are excellent books “Cadillac Desert” by Marc Reisner and “Water, the Epic Struggle for Wealth, Power and Civilization.” By Steven Solomon.
The next wars will not be over oil, they will be over water.
Next time you buy a bottle of water, check the label. You may have paid $1.50 for tap water, if it says purified drinking water.
There is convincing research that your tap water is better for you than the bottled water. In fact, bottling companies take “free” tap water, bottle it & sell it to the public. If the label says Treated Municipal Water, it is tap water. Tap water is tested 30 times a day whereas bottled water is not required to be tested and is not. See the documentaries “Tapped” & “Blue Gold”. Be suspect of research saying how bad tap water is because it is paid for by, you guessed it, the bottling companies.
Mark Twain said, “Whiskey is for drinking, water is for fighting over!”
What are your experiences with water where you live?
What else about water should we research?
2.
A Lady Tasting Tea
Class:
At a summer tea party in Cambridge, England, a lady states that tea poured into milk tastes differently than that of milk poured into tea. The lady in question claimed to be able to tell whether the tea or the milk was added first to a cup. Her notion was thought unlikely by the scientific minds of the group. But one guest, by the name Sir Ronald Fisher (1890-1962) proposes to scientifically test the lady’s hypothesis. There was no better person to conduct such a test, for Fisher had brought to the field of statistics an emphasis on controlling the methods for obtaining data and the importance of interpretation. He knew that how the data was gathered and applied was as important as the data themselves. Fisher proposed to give her eight cups, four of each variety, in random order. One could then ask what the probability was for her getting the number she got correct or just by chance. The woman got all eight cups correct. The chance of someone who just guesses getting all correct, assuming she guesses that four had the tea put in first and four the milk, would be only 1 in 70 (p=.014). Apparently, the lady knew her tea.
Can you think of something in your everyday life that could be tested with research?
3.
Problem: There is an overpopulation of ducks at pond X which may lead to duck population starvation, epidemics of disease and increased pond costs.
Purpose: To inform City, State and Federal Wild Life management and local residents so they may make more informed decisions.
Question: What duck depopulation solution would be safest, quickest, beneficial to humans and most humane for the ducks?
Try this:
Topics: Pick one below
Flooding in the United States
Lettuce recall because of e coli.
Drought & fires in California.
Walmart hiring practices.
Drug abuse.
Covid-19 virus.
Any 1 topic is fine. Remember, the problem must contain a loss or cost. The question must contain the variable you will measure and the purpose must state who the report is for.
