Scenario/Post:
I have thoroughly enjoyed my practicum experience thus far! One of my objectives was to collaborate with my preceptor to help with quality healthcare outcomes i.e. help decrease wait times to be seen by the physician in the emergency department. One solution was to trial-run telemedicine physician visit. We attended an emergency management meeting that has been approved and will start as a trial run at one of our sister emergency rooms. Telemedicine is the use of remote healthcare technology to deliver clinical services. In order to decrease wait times and left-without-being-seen many emergency departments have incorporated a physician to participate in the triage process along with the telemedicine visit (Hamm et al., 2020). This has been a slow process within the emergency department. I will also say that they are also looking into eventually incorporating telemedicine within the emergency medical services (EMS) to help cut down on overcrowding and unnecessary emergency room visits. The amount of non-urgent emergency responses has steadily been increasing, patients are being transported to local emergency departments despite the fact that they could be treated by their primary care office or other primary facilities such as urgent care this leads to overcrowding (O’Sullivan and Schneider, 2022). There are a lot of regulations that need to be in place and one must be a prehospital physician with special training in order to do telemedicine in EMS. This will take time and will not be in place before my practicum but I thought it was exciting. Becoming a leader/manager is a huge responsibility. Your staff and patients rely on you to be supportive, advocate, and provide a safe work environment for them. I am learning the multiple responsibilities of an emergency room nurse manager. Nurse managers play a critical role in enhancing patient outcomes and nursing, therefore nurse managers should lead in a way that emphasizes safe and patient-centered care (Nurmeksela et al., 2021).
