The thesis should plainly state in sufficient detail, the overarching result of your analysis answering (not asking) these sample questions: o 100 Level (description) “What has been the international community’s response to piracy off the coast of Somalia?” o 200 Level (investigation) “Why is the international community responding to piracy off the coast of Somalia? o 300 Level (evaluation) “Has the international community’s response to Somali piracy been effective?” o 400 Level (solution) “How should the international community respond to piracy off the coast of Somalia?” • Not including a Biblical analysis or using a reference out of context o Recommend using 1-2 verses as the basis of your analysis o May use a Biblical event same as any historical event o You’d begin by giving the Biblical context then it’s applicability to your situation o If Biblical analysis is important it should be in the body, and if it is the basis of analysis, it should be in the introduction and maybe the thesis • Not including one or more counterpoints • Citing or using conjecture in lieu of evidence (Perfectly acceptable to use conjecture before/after evidence – as long as the evidence supports the opinion) • Not answering the thesis statement in the body (This is made more difficult by the lack of a good thesis statement) • Not providing sufficient or too much evidence – the target is enough for the appropriate decision-maker to base their decision • Not concluding with a summation of the answer to the thesis statement • Introducing new material in the conclusion • Lack of diligence in selection of references • Using hyperbole, exaggerations, absolutes, colloquialisms, informal abbreviations, imprecise adjectives & adverbs, “quotation marks,” abnormal fonts (bold, italics, underlined) • Lack of proof-reading
