Bible Verses on Debt

The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender. (Proverbs 22:7 ESV)

This verse speaks of the dangers of falling into debt. When a person is in debt, they really are not free, for they always owe money to someone else. Also, those who are poor (in debt), are always going to be lorded over by the wealthy. This verse reminds me of the dangers of being in debt, and so I chose it to think about who I want to be indebted to, and the ramifications the debt will have on my life.

Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. (Romans 13:8 ESV)

This verse tells me that the only debt I should really have in life is loving each other. Instead of borrowing things I have to repay, what I should do is keep my ledger free, except when it comes to love. Then I should always strive to love others the way Christ first loved me. I chose this verse to remind me that instead of consuming stuff, and going into debt for it, I should love people and treat them the way Christ would have me treat them.
