Why did you select this news story for scientific and personal study

Review the news story that you chose to complete the topic exploration graphic organizer from Theme: Understanding the Scientific Process and complete the following:

Explain the article in your own words, providing a brief summary.

Why did you select this news story for scientific and personal study? In other words, what was it about the news story that interested you or made you curious?

When responding to your peers’ posts, consider the following: Is their reasoning clear? Does it make sense to you? Where might there similarly be room for interpretation in your own post, and how might you clarify? Your review of your peers’ posts will help inform your approach to your Project 2: Question Development Worksheet submission.

As you complete this assignment, note that your answers to these questions or closely related questions will be part of your Project 2: Question Development Worksheet submission, which is due at the end of this theme. It is recommended that, in addition to entering the answers to the questions below, you save your answers in a Word document that you can refer to later when completing Project 2.

Scientists have now been able to identify a “ringing” or “clicking” sound coming from infant black holes for the first time, using Einstein’s equations. Because of this, scientists have found that the ringing can predict a black hole’s mass and spin. The team of astrophysicists was able to conclude that no other properties exist within a black hole by using LIGO (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory), confirming that for now, black holes are believed to be “hairless”. A hairless black hole refers to the middle of the black hole being unobservable with no extra characteristics. Scientists hope to observe black holes further using LIGO in the future.

I have been curious and fascinated about space phenomena like supernovas, exoplanets, and black holes. When choosing an article, I debated between this article and another, but both were closely related to the same topic. I selected this one because I am interested in learning more about the topic for more than just this class. I believe that because I can study a subject that I am interested in and can do the extra research for the class is a win-win. I am hoping studying this article will help me to expand my research on the topic beyond this class.

Hello,

The Science Daily news story I chose is, “Easy Prey, The largest bears in the world use small streams to fatten up salmon”. The story is based on the need to consider the preservation of smaller water ways when the environmental impact of large-scale construction projects is assessed. The importance of these small streams and ponds has often been overlooked as being considered “lesser waterways”. Adult and Juvenile bears alike use these water ways to hunt and feed earlier in the season than large water way would allow for.

The reason I chose this article is because I love the outdoors. I’m an avid fisherman and hunter, and I find it fascinating that bears are smart enough to capitalize on different waters in different times of year. The fact that an animal can use different types of water ways to its advantage to survive makes me realize just how much man has learned from beast.
