After reading about Wakefield’s study, I came to the conclusion that Wakefield used this study with a bias and found a way to prove what he believe to be true, and did not use the scientific method as a means to get the facts. Wakefield‘s approach to the study was flawed from the start, he used information given to him from the children’s parents to create a baseline and then gathered information after the vaccine was given to determine if the vaccine was the reason for the problems.
A control group is crucial to the scientific method, because without it you will never know without a doubt what factored in to make the difference in the groups. If Wakefield would have taken the time to study a larger group for some time before taking the shot, not using the information given to him, and only give the shot to half of the children with the other half receiving a placebo shot, the data collected and evidence to prove or disprove his hypothesis would have been valid. This would have also been able to be duplicated with similar results and found to be true.
Due to Wakefields lack of knowledge or care about the scientific method, and his inflated conclusion causing wide spread panic, I believe Wakefield clearly should have been barred from medical practice. Seeing how he found ways to prove he was right, no telling how many times he was wrong with diagnosis and refused to change his opinion. This looks like he was paid to make it look a certain way, and that causes doubt in his character.
