Peer reviewed research is scholarly documentation that is reviewed by other scholars. Having other scholars review content prior to publication contributes to the integrity of the literature, in ensuring the accuracy and perspective of other key contributors. I must admit I am guilty of believing some of these misconceptions, especially believing that authors qualify as experts on their area of research. I was not aware of the differences as it relates to literary and empirical articles. Simpson and Walker (2020) explains peer reviewed articles can either include simplified information while another consists of descriptive information that is pertinent to the researcher. The empirical peer reviewed article holds similarity to the formation of the dissertation (Simpson and Walker ,2020). When gathering research for the dissertation, a doctoral student must verify the information collected as well as the researcher’s background to ensure the information collected is valid but accurate as well. There are many aspects to ensuring the data you collect is worthy of reviewing. Sun et al. (2020) acknowledges the precise and strategic development of gaining journal recognition through the process of developing scientific literature. Sun et al. (2020) also specifies that journal submission often requires a principal investigator when documenting scientific data. Lastly, I believe I am capable of reviewing peer reviews with honest and clear views. It speaks to integrity of both myself and my responsibility in the process.

Over the past years from my bachelors to masters degree, my perception of scholarly literature has always been about believing good research. I was curious why some articles or studies were written without an introduction, the findings or conclusions. An article without the description of the study, an introduction, the research question, a methodology, the results, and the conclusion are not empirical articles or studies (Stimpson & Walker, 2020). Now I realize there is a difference between a literary article and an empirical article. Conducting a thorough critical review of the article is important to determine its credibility. Stimpson & Walker (2020) noted doctoral learners should evaluate who published the source and the authority of the source, in addition, the purpose of the work. Knowing these factors will help distinguish if the work is biased or has a conflict of interest. As a doctoral learner, the need to use research that is current within the past five years is required and one seminal work will be accepted for the dissertation. Peer review is reading and critiquing a researchers work to see if they followed the research process (Stimpson & Walker, 2020). At this point, I am not 100% ready to critique research but it will be a task to be learned and complete.

The difference in the development of the author’s thoughts are that, the author began with a simple claim but with reading and more reading the author was able to find supportive content to contribute to the thought and utilize it. According to Eckstein et al. (2020) citations are used to validate an author’s claim and verify that the argument has been investigated thoroughly. This author was able to find substantiated empirical data that had been studied and verified as relevant to area of study. I have found that there is very little credibility in producing thoughts in higher education without supportive evidence to back it up. All information must be followed up with sufficient citations of authors who have not only made similiar claims but has studied it. Citations are evidence that supports the idea that others have had, studied and verified similar claims to the original idea. If evidence cannot be secured then the idea is just that an idea. Thru careful research students find information that contributes to the knowledge they entail. As we discussed in the prior discussion, finding evidence may not make them an expert but supportive data is evidence that their claims is valid.
When looking at the examples, the writer states his/her own opinions, which offers no creditability to citing a resource without a view. By the third example, the writer has developed a thoroughly thought out piece by including citations, research findings, and then explaining the implications of the results.While there is no standard definition of what it means to have an academic voice, according to Robbins, academic voice is the difference between a writer\’s thoughts and words and other writers (Robbins, 2016). When citations are added to an article, it establishes the academic voice of an author because not only is he/she is presenting facts, ideas, and conclusions of other authors they are also showing their point of view or stance on the topic. When an author can effectively communicate his/her point of view while also offering the ideas and conclusions of others, they have used their academic voice.Lastly, using citations shows that the writer has done the research and knows what others say about the topic. When an author provides sources, it puts their work into an academic context.
