My topic is (Robots)

Step 1:

Research Process Step 1: An annotated bibliography is a list of sources with annotations, listed in alphabetical order. An annotation is a one or two paragraph summary and/or analysis of a source. This type of bibliography will help guide the student’s research and prepare them for the research essay with a critical evaluation of the sources.

Recommended length: 4-6 pages, double-spaced in 12pt font. APA Format.

The annotated bibliography will be your source for your Final Research Paper. I am recommending two different “focus” for your research below. Although for the purpose of this specific assignment, it doesn’t really matter which path you follow-consider that your Synthesis or Step Two and Final Research paper will most likely use some of the sources included in your annotated bibliography-so you might try to really begin to focus on articles that capture your own interest, and especially if following your interests will make this course more worthwhile to you.

Path A Instructions

Pick any topic that relates to artificial intelligence/bio-molecular genetic engineering and research it! You might choose from movies/films about artificial intelligence, or cultural/societal impacts of changing technologies, or ethical concerns and consequences. Here’s a link to an article (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. from one of my favorite cognitive scientists (Andy Clark (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.) in which he obviously is a strong proponent of the merger of AI/genetics and humanity. You could do a little research into his body of work and using some aspects of the Blade Runner movie to discuss the potential hazards of this type of human cyborg future. Just a few thoughts out loud-follow your own research questions and interests!

Step 2:

Research Process Step 1: Synthesis writing is a written discussion that draws on one or more sources. In an academic synthesis, you make explicit the relationships that you have inferred among separate sources. Go beyond summary to make judgments – judgments based, of course, on critical reading of the sources. Go beyond the critique of individual sources to determine the relationship among them.

Recommended length: 4-5 pages, double-spaced in 12pt font. APA Format.

Research Step One Instructions

Using as many sources from your Annotated Bibliography as are applicable to your research question:

Step One-Synthesis-the act of merging at least two sources of research into a coherent analysis/argument.

Path B Instructions

Simply find a set of articles (preferable scholarly or professional) that describe clearly some impact of artificial intelligence/genetics on a field/major discipline (maybe yours!). Discuss the specific concerns or controversies, and then enter into the discussion by relating some of your own knowledge and experience.

Step 3:

Instructions for Revision

1-Revise Step 1 (Synthesis Essay) and consider how to improve the essay. You might take a look at the link here to U Washington’s directions to revise. They’re pretty good, and by following the instructions you can improve any piece of writing. Revise/proofread/edit-submit.

2-You have to include a cover letter that describes your revision process that you used on the draft that you submitted. Explain to your reader how you revised your work and why, and reflect on the results of having to go through the formal revision process. Did you gain any different insights into your topic or into your own writing process?

Cover letter only needs to be a page or two.

So to be clear-you need to submit two document files-

-the revised paper

-the cover letter that explains what and why you revised and what you learned from revising.

Step 4:

Research Process Step 4: This is the final version of your essay after you have revised in Step Three. Make sure that it meets the final requirements briefly described here-and that you have fully addressed any issues that have been raised by your instructor in the First Draft/Second Draft notes/comments.

A research essay is an original essay where the student poses a research question, gathers materials (designing interview questions, observing and taking notes, designing questionnaires, critical analysis of readings and sources) focuses the research, shapes the argument, and frames the materials in relation to the larger themes developed in the course. Recommended Length: 8-10 pages, double-spaced in 12pt font. APA Format. Yes…the page length includes a page of citations and your cover page!

Important Instructions!!!

If you are satisfied with the grade/score that you received in Step Three of the Research Process (for example, maybe you received a 93 on your essay) and you don’t feel like revising further-You don’t have to! Just resubmit for the same score.

If, however, you do want to revise again for the Final submission-please send your instructor a note by email that you have revised the paper further and would like for his/her final review and appraisal.
