Paper 2: Resisting McDonaldization

Paper 2: Resisting McDonaldization. (150 points) Date due: June 18, 2014. Submit to a Dropbox in

Learning studio (eCollege).

Each student will select a social institution, such as education, the economy, the polity, the family, religion, the media, the military, etc. that he or she thinks has become McDonaldized. The paper should discuss 1) the McDonaldization of the institution AND 2) research and discuss efforts that are being undertaken to counter or resist the trend. Students should look, for instance, for alternative lifestyles, alternative forms of organization, or social movements that address the issue. They will decide which efforts are most promising or realistic in resisting McDonaldization. Their analysis should emphasize our course core value of Community.

Each student must use at least 3 scholarly references in addition to the course text books. Students must comply with the sections on references and academic sources found below.

Required Format for Papers
1. The paper must be typed and double-spaced;12 pt. font size Times New Roman is required. Should average 21-22 lines of text per page.
2. Minimum of 5 full pages. Title page and reference page do not count toward the 5 full-page requirement.
3. Paper must have a Title page and a References page.
4. Paper 1 may be written in the 1st person. However, Paper 2 must be written in the 3rd person.

References
1) For Paper 2: References may consist of three (3) scholarly, peer-reviewed academic journals or books. A minimum of 3 scholarly references must be used. (3 is the bare minimum and may not be sufficient for your needs; use as many references as you deem necessary).
2) Cite references to substantiate or justify your statements. You must always cite references in the text of your paper whenever you use somebody’s ideas or argument, even if you paraphrase. Failure to cite references could cost up to 20% of the paper grade.
3) You may use the course textbook as one of your references, however, use it sparingly. Building your paper around the course textbook defeats the purpose of a research paper.
4) Avoid the excessive use of quotes. Quotes should comprise no more than 10% of your paper. Stating concepts and ideas in your own words displays an understanding of the material.

Academic Sources
Internet sources may be convenient to access, but unfortunately, most of internet sources do not qualify as academic references.
1) Wikipedia and similar sites are NOT acceptable academic references and should not be used. When you “Google” a topic, you may get 1 million hits; however, chances are less than 50 would qualify as an academic reference.
2) Blogs, yahoo answers, wiki answers, cliff notes, face book postings, and similar sites are NOT acceptable references.
3) If you need to use a news source, The New York Times may be used but it does not count as a scholarly reference.
4) When using Google as a search engine, use Google Scholar.

APA or ASA requirement
Students are required to use APA (American Psychological Association) format or ASA (American Sociological Association) format to write their papers. APA has been adopted by the Department as its writing standard for all academic written assignments. No other writing style is acceptable.
APA is the American Psychological Association, and the style is one of many in the academic world used to regulate the language, citations, procedure and formatting of manuscripts and other examples of writing in the social sciences. Please be consistent throughout each written paper.

Refer to the APA Manual for Publication, 6th edition for guidance. Also, an on-line reference for APA can be accessed at the following website:

For each paper, the work will be assessed using an individual grading rubric for each assignment. This tool and process helps the students identify and professor measure the key points necessary to successfully complete written or group assignments. Wikipedia is not an appropriate source for any scholarly writing and should not be used for any assignments in this course. The rubric will be provided separately.
