As I was reading the example, the thought of this not being morally or ethically right entered my thoughts. Code of Ethics would play a major role in the therapeutic relationship boundaries as it states that as professional counselors’ services cannot be provided to family members or friends.
As a friend one would be a sounding board for their friend to vent. In therapeutic relationships one is listening to provide a solution to the situation. The relationship between a counselor and client is that of a professional who is bound by state and local laws of confidentiality and to cause no harm to the client. As for counselor and friend, there would be gray areas because of the friendship. One may think they are just helping a friend but may do more harm than good. Especially if the friend is expecting their counselor friend to provide something that may be out of their skill set.
When having a conversation with a friend it would be a back and forth of information versus in therapeutic relationship the counselor would be actively listening in order to best assess the client. Also, the counselor would ask open ended questions to gain more information if the client is being reluctant to provide the information. To be sure no lines are crossed with friends or family it would be best to refer to another counselor that would be able to assist them.
