The Fundamentals of Public Speaking

Week 2 Discussion – The Fundamentals of Public Speaking (one page)

This week you will have read chapters 2 and 3. These chapters go into detail on the importance of studying/practicing public speaking, the basic concepts and components of it, and strategies on dealing with public speaking anxiety. In this week’s discussion board, we’ll be aiming to apply these fundamentals to situations in our own lives as well as work on analyzing and pointing them out in situations we observe.

Give a thoughtful response (100-200 words) to each of the following discussion questions:

  • Why should communication be labeled as “transactional?” How does this apply to your role as a public speaker? As a student in general?
  • What are some ways in which technology has impacted how you communicate with others? Do you think that an over-reliance on technological communication has affected the way we communicate with others face-to-face? How does this impact your perception of the act of public speaking?
  • What are some specific things that make you nervous about public speaking? What are some ways in which you can ensure that these things don’t happen?
  • Do you still feel nervous when recording yourself speaking vs. speaking to a live audience? If so, how does this nervousness differ in this context?

Hi all!

Before you start to practice and deliver your speech, you need to have a plan for what you will be talking about! Creating an outline is a great way to organize your talking points, which will make it much easier to get into the flow of your speech. Here are the requirements:

  • At the beginning of your document, include a short preface (a paragraph or two) describing the topic that you will be speaking about and why you chose to do so.
  • Create an outline that shows the main sections of your speech and the talking points that are contained within each! Everyone works differently, so as long as there are clear sections and notes for each, how you format this section is up to you! Include:
    • An introduction with a clearly defined “hook” or a clear statement about what your object is and what it represents
    • Your main talking points (2-3) with some notes about what you are planning to say about each
    • A conclusion that finishes strong and ties together your ideas in a concise and effective manner
    • At the bottom of this section, write down your general/specific purposes for this speech. Make them stand out so that you never lose focus on what your purpose is!
  • At the bottom of your document, write down some challenges that you think might face in writing/performing this speech and some possible ways you might try to overcome them!
