reply 1 – The main thing that I learned was that the reduced fat products usually contain more ingredients, but they are mainly natural ingredients while the regular products contain ingredients that are “bioengineered” that they don’t really want to list. The reduced fat items also contain less calories. When it comes to name brand compared to store brand products, they usually contain the same fat as a percentage of total calories. They also contain about 2/3 of the same ingredients. Their nutrition facts label are almost identical. They only contain about 1 gram difference. Not to mention that store brand is usually cheaper than name brand. If I was on a diet, I would choose the reduced fat because there are less calories and they contain more natural ingredients. However, if I was at the store and it came between store brand and name brand, I would choose name brand. If there wasn’t a specific one available, I would choose whatever was available, reduced fat, original or store brand. As long as you don’t eat over the serving size, you are fine. It is nice to know the difference in these products to have the option to make healthier choices.

reply 2 – The main thing that I learned from comparing the brands in the lab was that regular and reduced-fat products are not so different. Sure, if you’re focused on fat content it’s good to cut down where you can but, in general, the rest of the nutrition facts are very similar. To that end, the name brand and store brand products were not that different. However, when it came to the store brand cookies, it seemed that they were a better option nutritionally and financially. This lab highlighted the importance of checking nutrition labels especially when it comes down to comparisons. I know that for me, I will be more open to considered store-brand products (especially as a low budget college student) as well as not fussing too much over whether a product has a reduced-fat label or not.
