Probation officer
You are a probation officer working in your community. You currently serve as a supervisor for the probation department. The probation department recently hired several new probation officers. You have determined that it would be helpful if you provided a memo summarizing some important information for the new probation officers. The probation department is divided in three departments, as follows:
- Pretrial Department
- Presentence Department
- Supervision Department
Because you work for a small probation department, the new officers may have to handle cases in each department. So that the probation officers have a document to reference in the future, you need to prepare a memorandum explaining certain steps in the criminal process and their role in the process. Include the following information in your memorandum:
- Summarize the factors that judges may consider when determining whether or not a defendant awaiting trial should be detained in jail or allowed to be released on bond:
- If released on bond, provide some options that may be conditions of release on bond.
- Summarize the factors that a judge may consider at sentencing.
- Because some of the convicted defendants may appeal their conviction or sentence, explain the 3 main options that appellate courts have when making decisions.
