Introduction
Falls among the elderly is a huge problem both in and outside the hospital. Under the Fiscal Year 2009 Inpatient Prospective Payment System Final Rule and the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 as outlined by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare services, the financial burden prevention was placed on hospitals. This situation has led to an increase in inpatient falls over the years. According to statistics from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, inpatient falls rate today ranges from 1.75 to 2.5 falls per a thousand patient days. Despite an increase in inpatient falls, there are various measures that can be put in place to combat the situation.
