Due to family obligations, our president will resign on June 30. He will return to Missouri where he will become provost at the University of Missouri.
A search committee of 4 administrators, 4 faculty and 4 students spent the next several months reviewing a pool of more than 200 potential candidates. A group of five finalists was drawn from that pool. Of the five finalists, two candidates withdrew. Of the remaining three, one candidate was agreed upon by all 12 committee members after an exhaustive set of telephone and campus interviews.
Today, the finalist agreed to terms and has signed a contract.
James Newcastle will be the next chancellor of this institution, starting on September 1.
He is 49 years old.
He is married to wife, Beth. They have two sons: Bob (21) and Bill (25).
His last job was as provost at West Northeastern University in Fargo, North Dakota, where he served for four years. He has also been the chairman of the department of communications at Indiana State University, where he was also a faculty member for 12 years.
He has a BA in journalism from the University of Georgia. He has a master’s degree in psychology from Stanford University. He has a Ph.D. in communications from the University of Texas.
He served terms as the National Communication Association president and vice president. He has also served on more than a dozen state and regional communication association boards of directors.
He lives in Fargo, North Dakota, and plans to relocate to Savannah in July to begin to learn about the city and the university.
He has a history of fundraising, including the creation of a $16.8 million endowment for the West Northeastern University Department of Journalism. The endowment created a nationwide news service staffed entirely by students and overseen by professors, making it the first of its kind.
STATEMENT FROM BURT SOSA, PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH AND SEARCH CHAIR:
“We had so many great candidates, but Jim really came to the top of the pile. He was someone who had the background we needed as a university leader and the energy we need to keep the university moving in a positive direction. He jumped off the page, so to speak, and was so much more than his resume dictated. He had so many great ideas as to how to help us go forward as a university and yet he respected who we are. So many other people ride in on a platform of change. They want to change everything before they even know anything about a university. Jim didn’t do that. He saw so many great things we were already doing and looked at ways to support and improve them. He also saw greatness in our faculty and offered ways to get our professors and instructors additional resources. He saw our students and offered ways to give them more education for fewer dollars. I couldn’t have asked for more in a president.”
STATEMENT FROM ELLA SDELI, SENIOR POLITICAL SCIENCE MAJOR AND HEAD OF STUDENT GOVERNMENT:
“I was fortunate enough to meet Dr. Newcastle when he visited campus and he struck me as a bright, energetic leader. I think he’s got exactly what this university needs to push us forward into the future. In these times of budget tightening, his fundraising skills will be a definite asset. He knows that students are our most precious resources and that if we all work together to do better, we will make this university great. However, the best thing he has going for him, in my opinion, is that he’s a people person. I think he will take the student perspective into account in every decision and in every way possible.”
STATEMENT FROM PAUL FLIPPERTON, PRESIDENT, WEST NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY
“I’m really sad that we will be losing Dr. Newcastle as our provost, not just because of how much he did for West Northeastern University, but also because how great he is as a person. When I got here in 2014, Jim was the first person to greet me. He was helpful and energetic. He really helped me get my feet under me and he really inspired me. That’s what I’ll remember most. His legacy on this campus will not be forgotten any time soon, thanks in large part to his fundraising effort for the journalism endowment. The ‘News of the World’ project will serve as a great opportunity for our students for many years to come. That would not have been possible without Jim’s efforts. I wish him well as president and I hope he does extremely well for the students and faculty there.”
